Maryland guard Pe’Shon Howard has transferred to USC, a USC basketball source confirmed.
Howard, who is originally from Los Angeles and wanted to be closer to his ailing grandmother, is in the process of filing a hardship waiver with the NCAA to allow him to play immediately. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
“The main reason I chose USC was to be closer to my family,” Howard said in a telephone interview. “My grandmother being sick factored a lot into the decision. My dad grew up in the area, so I was really familiar with USC growing up.”
Howard first met new USC basketball coach Andy Enfield when Enfield was an assistant coach at Florida State.
“We have a great relationship,” Howard said about Enfield. “He told me his plans for me and the program, and made me feel comfortable.”
Omar Oraby was granted a hardship waiver to play immediately this past season after transferring from Rice. Alex Stepheson, however, had his hardship waiver application denied after transferring from North Carolina in 2008.
“It would be a dream come true to play right away,” Howard said.
The Trojans were in need of a point guard following the departure of Jio Fontan. Should he be declared eligible immediately, Howard will compete for playing time with sophomore Chass Bryan and incoming freshman Julian Jacobs.
Took a while for this to happen but glad it finally did. Far too light at the point. Now, if we could find a big man to spell Omar we might have a squad who actually can suit up this coming year… Any whispers on that front?
The immediate options are few and far between this late in the recruiting game, but the staff is actively exploring all options.

Have fun with Pe’shon USC! Was supposed to be good but does nothing but take up space on the roster. Can’t shoot or pass very well.
